Quit Smoking Methods

By Jason D

It is estimated that about 20% of adults smoke and out of that 20%, 70% want to quit smoking. There is a large market for quit smoking products, but what really works? What product will work for you? When looking at methods to quit smoking it is important to ask yourself the question, “Is it too good to be true?” If it is then it may be a scam. Use caution when looking at methods to quit smoking.

Common quit smoking methods include, laser therapy, hypnotism, acupuncture, nicotine replacement products, prescription drugs, programs, and ebooks. Oh yah, don’t forget about quitting smoking “cold turkey.” Out of all these different quit smoking methods, which one will work for you? When determining which method may work best for you consider the following:

  • Do you believe in it? Lets take for example hypnotism. If you believe hypnotism is a bunch of hooey then this may not be the method you wish to choose to quit smoking.

  • What does it cost? Just think how much money you would save each week if you were to quit smoking. The money you could save by not smoking could be significant but that may not mean you have the financial means to go with any quit smoking method. For example; laser therapy can be costly and multiple treatments may be required.

  • Is it a good fit for me? When considering methods to quit smoking it is important to evaluate the ones that fit your life style. What do you think will work for you? If you know nothing about acupuncture you may either want to learn about it or choose a different method to quit smoking. No matter which method you choose it is a good idea to learn about that method. Get any questions you have about side effects or concerns answered.

  • What has worked for me in the past? Maybe you have quit before only to start up months or years later for what ever reason. If it worked for you in the past it could very well work for you again.
Is it a complete and comprehensive plan that will teach me how to quit smoking? To be honest you can’t just pop a pill and quit smoking. No matter which method you choose there will be some work involved. Choose a quit smoking method that provides you will a plan on how to quit smoking.

Making the decision to quit smoking is the beginning to living a smoke-free life. Quitting smoking “cold turkey” is not the only way to quit smoking. There are many different quit smoking methods that have proven to be effective for people whom have quit smoking. To be successful in your efforts to quit smoking find the method that you think would suit you best and do your homework. If you don’t succeed at first, don’t give up. Studies have shown that it may take several tries to quit smoking, but don’t use that as an excuse to smoke.

Quitting Smoking - Habit vs. Addiction

For so many years I used to think that smoking was merely a bad habit. A habit that I was having a very hard time breaking. I thought that if I were to find different habits to replace my smoking habit then I would be able to quit smoking. Unfortunately it did not work because I was dealing with much more than a bad habit, I was dealing with a very powerful addiction.

We all have habits, good and bad, that we do each and every day. Drinking coffee in the morning can be a habit. If you are to miss your morning coffee you may find it more difficult to get going but you are able to overcome and the rest of your day is not contingent upon whether you had your morning coffee or not. The point is, habits don’t control our lives. They are things that we have grown accustom to doing which may help or at times hurt us. Smoking can be viewed as a habit but it is not the habit of smoking that makes it difficult to quit smoking.

Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to man. When quitting smoking it is important to realize that we are not trying to break a bad habit but in all actuality overcome a powerful addiction that is controlling our lives. We don’t smoke because the voice in our head is telling us we need to be holding a stick in our hand or needing to hang something in our mouth. If that were the case we could find less harmful things to achieve this. The voice in our head is due to the nicotine withdrawals we go through. People who smoke suffer from these withdrawals several times throughout the day. That is why we smoke. That is why we plan our day around when we can have our next cigarette. There is a reason why there are 20 cigarettes in a pack. Typically that is the amount of cigarettes one must smoke to satisfy the daily nicotine withdrawal urges.

Tobacco companies weren’t ignorant when they introduced cigarettes to society, neither is the government. The fact is both are making money off the sale of cigarettes, a lot of money. If the government was so concerned with our well being then why don’t they remove a product from the market that is proven to kill people who use it? This may be a bit extreme but it is true. Cigarettes are designed to get people addicted to them, they serve no benefit to anyone that uses them. The only people that benefit from cigarettes are the ones that make money off them. Even the pharmaceutical companies are cashing in on our nicotine addiction. Many of the over-the-counter quit smoking aids contain nicotine. By using these products you are still feeding that addiction in one form or another.

When quitting smoking it is important to understand that smoking is not simply a habit, it is an addiction that is being capitalized on by many. Don’t trade one form of addiction for another. Start with your desire to quit smoking and educate yourself on the effects of nicotine addiction. You don’t have to be a smoker your whole life. You can quit smoking and regain control of your life.
