Living a healthy lifestyle is a subject of much debate in the media and throughout the world. Every self-proclaimed fitness guru has a new theory on what a healthy lifestyle is. In reality, it’s pretty hard to make heads or tails of any of it. It’s hard to know what to believe and what to throw out like yesterday’s garbage. Let’s look at some of the ways that you can live a healthy lifestyle.

One of the most important factors to living a healthy lifestyle is your diet. What goes inside your body plays a huge role in how healthy it is. This may seem like common sense but you’d be surprised how many people overlook this simple approach. To really be healthy takes some work on your part. You have to take the road less traveled and eat only healthy foods. There are several barriers to this but it can be done.

The biggest barrier that must be overcome is inconvenience. Eating healthy is not usually convenient. It’s that simple. It takes some planning on your part. You have to plan out your meals ahead of time and get the food that you need. If you go to the store once a week, then you need to plan out every meal for that week. Taking your lunch with you is one way to make sure of what you’re going to eat every day. Many people won’t eat healthy, simply because it’s too hard. They take the easy way out and just eat whatever sounds good at the time. There’s nothing wrong with that occasionally, but when you make it a habit, it can be destructive. Going to a fast food restaurant saves so much time that many people do that all the time. However, fast food is easily the unhealthiest food that you could put in your body. A greasy burger and fries can give you your entire daily-recommended intake of calories in one meal. Eating one huge, unhealthy meal wreaks havoc on your metabolism and health. Be sure of what is going into your body everyday and you will undoubtedly live a healthy lifestyle.

Exercise plays a very large part in living a healthy lifestyle. While this may not be the sexiest alternative of living a healthy lifestyle, it is certainly the most practical. Many people want to just follow the latest fad diet and find a healthy lifestyle that way. However, a fad diet is exactly what it sounds like…a fad. It comes and goes very quickly. It usually doesn’t have very sound advice and focuses more on the short-term. Frequent exercise is the only way to sustain long-term health.

The benefits of exercise are numerous and very important. One of the most prevalent diseases in the world today is heart disease. Exercise can greatly improve your cardiovascular health. The fewer times that your heart has to beat, the better it is for you in the long run. This is why cardiovascular exercise is so important. While it is very important, it is probably the most dreaded form of exercise for most people. Not everyone enjoys running two or three miles every day. The key to sticking to a schedule is to take your mind off of the actual exercise. Turn it into something fun if possible.

One way to do this is to exercise with other people. If you develop a routine of jogging with a friend or swimming, or whatever else you like to do, it will be easier to make yourself do it. When another person holds you accountable, you’re a lot less likely to give up. Most people just don’t have the self-discipline needed to make themselves exercise. Another way to get exercise is to play a sport that you love. If basketball is fun for you, go to the gym and play. If you like tennis, go hit the ball around. The sport will take your mind off the action of exercise and you won’t even realize you’re doing it. This is critical if you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. When you can exercise for an hour or two and not even think about it, you will undoubtedly be healthier. In summary, if you want to live a healthy lifestyle, get up off the couch and start exercising.

We have all heard it again and again, exercising is very important. Yet we avoid it because it is boring and time consuming. Our lifestyle has gotten so fast paced that we neglect important issues including exercise and eating right. Do you ever feel tired or sluggish during the day? Do you still feel tired when you have to get out of bed in the morning? This could be your body’s way of telling you it needs more exercise. If you aren’t participating in enough physical activity you could be putting on weight. That will wear you out as well as put unnecessary stress on your heart, bones, and joints.

Taking the time to exercise just 30 minutes a day will lower your chance of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. You will also feel better during the day. Some people think they are just too tired to exercise. Ironically, their body is tired because they don’t exercise. Taking the time to exercise will boost your energy level. You will sleep better too.

Adding exercise to your daily routine doesn’t have to be boring or difficult. Start by making some simple changes. Go for a walk at lunch and on breaks. This will help you relax as well as get you some exercise time in. Take up a sport. If you have children get outside and play with them. Get a friend or spouse to join you for a leisurely walk each evening. This is a great way to exercise as well as stay connected. The gym is also a great option. Park at the end of the parking lot and walk. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

The key is to find some type of physical activity that you enjoy. This will motivate you to stick with it as well as make it something you look forward to instead of something you dread. Start out with just ten minutes a day and add a few minutes each day until you are up to a full 30 minutes each day. Choosing several activities will also keep you from getting bored.

Tips For Eating A Healthy Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it seems that with our busy lifestyles, breakfast has fast slipped down our list of priorities. Breakfast it seems, has been reduced to a sugary muffin and coffee on the go, losing all nutritional value.

Our body starts demanding a supply of energy as soon as we wake up, whether we've eaten or not. Our brain cannot store any energy for itself and constantly requires a supply of glucose. Not eating, especially in the morning, can hamper mental alertness and put a strain on both our bodies and brain.

Here are some tips for eating a healthy breakfast that will set you up for an energized and mentally alert day:

1) Avoid refined carbohydrates

These include white breads, bagels or pastries. Normally refined carbohydrates have a high GI (glycemic index). This means that glucose is released rapidly into the blood stream, giving a very short-lived energy boost. Low GI carbohydrates such as wholemeal/ wholegrain breads, and cereals release energy slowly, allowing you to have a constant supply of energy until your next meal.

2) Include protein

These can be from meats from dinner left-overs, eggs, bananas or milk. Protein helps keep you fuller for longer.

3) Fruit and Vegetables

Most fruit and vegetables contain no cholesterol and are of low GI. You'll also get a good dose of important vitamins, minerals and fiber.

5) Get Creative

If you're getting bored of cereal, then try another cereal or something different all together. You could try making exotic fruit smoothies or fancy omelettes.

6) When on the go

Not having time shouldn't be an excuse to not eat breakfast. Give ready made liquid breakfasts a go. A quick trip to your supermarket should be enough to show you the varieties available. Cafes usually serve healthy food with fresh ingredients. Try grabbing a sandwich on your way to school or work.

7) Just eat something

Even if you're in a rush, have something, anything. Some juice, a glass of milk, a piece of toast. Anything that provides your body with an energy source.

Always keep in mind that your body has been starved of nutrients for at least 8 hours while you sleep. Eating a healthy breakfast will restore the depleted nutrients. It will also give you the kickstart you need to begin your day on the right foot.
